How to Care for Sled Dogs

How to Care for Sled Dogs
  • Feed them a special diet. This diet needs to be high-energy and nutritionally balanced.
  • Keep them in shape out-of-season, too. Have them pull carts with goodies for neighbors, or people to buy. If you have enough time, build a cart that has a seat made for two, so you and someone else can go riding.
  • Take them to the vet often. Sled dogs are more likely to have joint problems then regular companion dogs, so if you catch the problem early, it could save your dog’s life, and the entire team!
  • Hire a dog massage therapist, or learn dog massage. Massaging eases and prevents aching in your dog’s muscles, promote healthy blood flow, and strengthens bond between dog and musher.
  • Make sure your dogs know and have mastered the five basic commands: Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, Lay Down.
  • Be sure that all your dogs get along and work well as a team. If they don’t, a dog trainer needs to be hired!
  • Keep your dogs well-groomed.
